Terry Baucom Obituary, Age, Bio, NC: Legendary Banjo Player and Band Leader

In Memoriam: Legendary Banjo Player and Band Leader, Terry Baucom, Passes Away at 71

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of the esteemed banjo player and bluegrass singer, Terry Baucom, who breathed his last at the age of 71.

Terry Baucom was undeniably one of the foremost musicians in the realm of bluegrass music, leaving an indelible mark on the genre. Recognized as a founding member of iconic bands such as Boone Creek, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, and IIIrd Tyme Out, Baucom was a virtuoso banjoist with a career spanning six decades.

Baucom’s musical journey began at the age of 10 when he was inspired to learn the banjo after hearing Flatt & Scruggs on The Beverly Hillbillies. Over the years, he honed his craft, contributing his exceptional talent to some of bluegrass music’s most legendary groups. After playing with The Rocky River Boys, his father’s bluegrass group, Baucom co-founded Boone Creek with Ricky Skaggs, Jerry Douglas, Wes Golding, and Steve Bryant. He later joined Doyle Lawson’s original Quicksilver lineup, where he remained from 1979 to 1985, returning to the group in 2003. During his hiatus, Baucom formed IIIrd Tyme Out, featuring former Quicksilver members.

In addition to these influential bands, Baucom’s career included collaborations with Lou Reid & Carolina, Blue Ridge, and his own band, Dukes of Drive. Three months ago, after an illustrious professional career, Terry Baucom announced his well-deserved retirement.

News of Terry Baucom’s passing was conveyed on Facebook by his former bandmate and friend, Doyle Lawson, who shared heartfelt words: “It is with great sadness that I have been asked by Cindy Baucom on behalf of all of Terry Baucom’s family, to let you know that Terry passed away this morning. I’ve known Terry more than fifty years, and his impact within Bluegrass music speaks for itself.”

Terry Baucom faced a battle with Lewy Body Dementia, a diagnosis he bravely acknowledged earlier this year. Despite his health challenges, “Bauc” continued to play with Dukes of Drive until late May, remaining dedicated to his art and connecting with fans until his health no longer permitted.
