Saul Alvarez's last two fights have been defending his four Super Middleweight World Championship belts. Now, the WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has given the go-ahead for the Canelo Alvarez vs David Benavidez bout.
In May, Canelo defended his WBO belt against British John Ryder in Zapopan, in a unanimous decision win for the champion, later, In September the mandate was by the World Boxing Association and the challenger was Jermell Charlo, with another victory by full decision for Canelo again.
Now Canelo Alvarez must defend against the mandatory challenger of the World Boxing Council (WBC), a fight that would be in May 2024.
According to As who spoke to Mauricio Sulaiman, the WBC president mentioned that "Benavidez won the right to be the official challenger in March, and the date for a fight (against Canelo) starts in March 2024. He (Benavidez) fights on November 25, then first he has to pass that fight, we go to the convention we have in Uzbekistan in November and review the order of all the divisions and the status of the official challengers, but everything indicates that it is ready for Canelo against Benavidez, although first Benavidez has to win obviously,"
Criticism has followed Saul Alvarez throughout his career, however, much of that scrutiny does not come from international public opinion but from his own country as Sulaiman elaborated.
"I feel that Canelo has had a great career, always in the spotlight. He is an extraordinary fighter, he has taken risks taking fights in different weights, he is one of the greats, and it is a topic of debate in which many take the opportunity to throw Canelo and win likes because now people measure what you are worth by followers and likes" said Sulaiman.
This fight marks the turn of David Benavidez, with an undefeated record of 27-0 with 23 knockouts and who on November 25 will fight another undefeated fighter: Demetrius Andrade (32-0) in Las Vegas, a fight he must win if he wants to meet Alvarez.
